ORIGAMI 折り紙

1  ORIGAMI, or folding paper, is for everyone.  You can make everything and anything!  ORIGAMI MUSEUM in Ochanomizu, two stations from Tokyo Station, is a nice visit for those who like this Japanese art, as you can enjoy the exhibits, shop and participate in the classes (book in advance).  Visit the Ochanomizu article and enjoy this area at the same time!

2  ORIGAMI JEWELLERY CLASS

Today, we joined the origami jewellery class (Saturdays, from 13:30- for Y2500) and made tiny origami handbags which then transformed into earings, brooches/pins and so on.  Including practise, it took about two hours.  Depending on what you are making, the level will be different.  So, email/call ahead and reserve.  The teacher today was perfectly fluent in English as he was brought up in Canada and an origami self-taught master….amazing…

This is what we made!

3 ORIGAMI SHOP and expert show, if you are lucky…

Visit their origami shop as well as their washi (Japanese colored paper) shop.  If you are lucky, the master, Kobayashi san, will show you a demonstration.  Without looking at his hands, he can make origami art.  Again, simply amazing!

And their twitter site, with lots of pictures!

4 Origami History

History is unclear, but around 1700s, origami cranes and boats became very trend as decorations for kimono and ukiyoe.  That is when it really took off.

From Meiji era (1868-), origami started to be used as educational tools for younger kids.  In Germany, Friedrich Frobel (1782-1852) incorpated the geometrical aspect of origami as part of his nursery education theory.

4.1  Origami and Space??

However, origami is not only for kids.  Check out this video to see how origami is used in SPACE!  (these solar arrays were inspired by origami making)
